Remote control

Learn how to drive a robot by remote control using a real robot or a simulated one: try out the simple remote control programme.

Advanced extension activities:

How might you modify the simple remote control program described above so that you can:

  • explore the properties of differential drive? i.e. when you control the robot so that it drives forwards, backwards, turns or spins by separately powering left and right motors, how might you be able to observe this? (Hint: could you use a dialogue action to raise an alert - or say aloud which motors have been turned on?)

  • many planetary exploration robots, such as robots that are sent to Mars or the Moon, are remotely controlled from Earth. Although the control signal are sent at the speed of light using radio waves, the distance between the Earth and the Moon, or the Earth and Mars, are large enough for there to be a significant delay between when the command is sent and when it is actually received.

Find out what the nearest and furthest distances are between the Earth and the Moon and the Earth and Mars, and caluclate the time it takes for a radio signal to travel that distance. Can you modify the remote control porgram so that it can model this delay? (You will need to find some way of introducing a delay between activating the remote control and send a motor command to the robot).

  • how might you control your robot using a physical remote control device such as a wireless XBox controller?
